I always loved fashion but never knew it could be more than a hobby. Seriously – why do we create a society where our hobbies shouldn’t be our careers? Let’s step away from that thought and get back to it…
Around 2012, I was at the peak of my career in the backend of the fashion industry – we’re talking material development, design processes, merchandising, manufacturing and just plain getting the merchandise to the sales floor at any number of 100+ retailers that we partnered with. As the VP of Design for a major accessories company I loved my craft and was busier and more stressed than I ever imagined. But I loved the thrill of the process and even more so selling that concept to the retailer directly.
Several years later, after making a jump to another company I realized that this was just another band-aid that the industry didn’t need anymore of. Here’s the thing – when you do this job, you’re committed to doing whatever the retailer asks of you. The creativity is there, but the flexibility isn’t. This was a time when retailers started to go bankrupt, consumers’ shopping habits started to change and no one could keep up. Hello Amazon 2-day delivery!
I jumped ship with a big purpose. I wanted to bridge the gap between consumer and retailer in a way that just made so much sense to me. The lack of attention to the actual consumer at the store level at this point and time (and truly to this day) is astonishing. You can shop endlessly at major stores and find zero guidance from someone who actually cares what looks good on you or is really willing to help you find clothing, accessories, etc. that make sense for you and your lifestyle. How is this STILL a thing?! Consumers are literally shopping blindly out there…that’s YOU by the way!
The beginning of this phase began as a part-time stylist for start-ups. I worked with clients to create curated boxes of clothing to be shipped directly to their homes. Through analytics and consumer outreach we were able to hone in on clients needs, expectations and ultimately the perfect style and fit for each client. During this time I also worked for a high-end apparel and accessories collection based in NYC outfitting women in business. My skills were further streamlined as a master fitter for an ‘at your service’ tailoring service in NYC. Working directly with a tailor and fitting clients help to build my style expertise for my personal clients. I developed skills and relationships that hadn’t had a need to exist prior. I began to understand and document client’s buying patterns, experience with shopping, fit differences and ultimately the feeling that they had when it all came to life.
Sadly early in 2020, the dark days of COVID became a harsh reality in this consumer based fashion world. Frankly – no one was getting dressed – at least not in the same way they had been before. This period created a blank canvas for me to revamp my processes to make them more accessible to anyone, anywhere. I realized I didn’t need to be bound to one city with virtual styling as an option for all of my services. Now with virtual access and the ability to work with anyone, anywhere I’m able to have a much broader reach to help more people than ever before! With adversity comes change and for that I’m forever grateful for this time. Stepping back and getting recentered was a huge step for StyleBitts future success.
With the world in a continuously strange place, I have found hope as a light in the tunnel (not quite the end here). We’re easing out of our comfy clothes and back into clothing that fits better, looks a bit more elevated and helps us to feel more confident. Ultimately your confidence is my goal at the end of our journey together – but before we get there – we have to get started…
